What Is SFT?

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) is a brief, goal-oriented approach that focuses on what you want to achieve rather than dwelling on problems. Developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, it is based on the belief that you already have the resources and strengths needed to create change — you just may need help accessing them.

How It Works

Rather than analysing the causes of your difficulties, SFT directs attention toward your preferred future and the steps needed to get there. Key techniques include:

  • The miracle question: "If you woke up tomorrow and your problem was solved, what would be different?"
  • Scaling questions: Rating where you are now and where you want to be
  • Exception finding: Identifying times when the problem was less present or absent
  • Compliments and strengths: Recognising what you're already doing well

What SFT Can Help With

  • Goal setting and motivation
  • Building confidence
  • Workplace challenges
  • Relationship improvements
  • Mild to moderate anxiety or low mood
  • Life transitions
  • Parenting challenges

What to Expect

SFT is typically brief — often just a few sessions. It is positive, forward-looking, and empowering. You won't spend a lot of time talking about the past. Instead, we focus on where you want to go and how to get there using the strengths you already have.
