What Is IFS?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a transformative, evidence-based therapy developed by Dr Richard Schwartz. It is based on the idea that the mind is made up of multiple "parts" — each with its own perspective, feelings, and role — and a core Self that is compassionate, curious, and calm.

When parts become extreme (often due to painful experiences), they can drive behaviours we struggle to control — anxiety, self-criticism, avoidance, or emotional reactivity. IFS helps you understand and heal these parts so they no longer need to be extreme.

How It Works

In IFS, we work to identify your different parts and understand the roles they play:

  • Managers: Parts that try to keep you safe by controlling your environment and emotions
  • Firefighters: Parts that react impulsively to suppress emotional pain (through numbing, distraction, or self-destructive behaviours)
  • Exiles: Vulnerable parts carrying pain from past experiences that other parts try to protect

Through guided exploration, you learn to access your Self — the part of you that can hold compassion for all your parts — and begin to heal the wounds that drive extreme behaviours.

What IFS Can Help With

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Inner conflict and self-sabotage
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Eating disorders
  • Addiction
  • Perfectionism and people-pleasing

What to Expect

IFS sessions are gentle and exploratory. You'll be guided to notice different parts of yourself with curiosity rather than judgment. Many clients find IFS deeply validating — it helps them understand that nothing is "wrong" with them; their parts are simply trying to protect them in the best way they know how.
