Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy developed to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. It is recommended by both NICE and the World Health Organization as a front-line treatment for PTSD.
EMDR works by helping your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they become less emotionally charged and no longer trigger distressing reactions in the present.
When we experience something overwhelming, our brain can struggle to process the memory properly. Instead of being stored as a "past event," the memory stays live — easily triggered, emotionally intense, and sometimes accompanied by flashbacks or nightmares.
During EMDR, you focus on a distressing memory while simultaneously following bilateral stimulation (usually guided eye movements). This dual attention helps your brain's natural processing system "unstick" the memory and file it away as something that happened in the past rather than something that's still happening now.
EMDR does not require you to talk in detail about the traumatic event. Many clients find this a relief. Sessions are structured and follow a clear protocol, and we always ensure you feel safe and grounded throughout.
