What Is ACT?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a modern behavioural therapy that helps you develop psychological flexibility — the ability to be present, open up to difficult experiences, and take action guided by your values.

Rather than trying to eliminate difficult thoughts and feelings (which often makes them worse), ACT teaches you to change your relationship with them so they have less impact on your life.

How It Works

ACT is built on six core processes:

  • Acceptance: Making room for painful feelings rather than fighting them
  • Cognitive defusion: Stepping back from unhelpful thoughts rather than being caught up in them
  • Present moment awareness: Engaging fully with what's happening right now
  • Self-as-context: Connecting with a stable sense of self beyond your thoughts and feelings
  • Values: Clarifying what truly matters to you
  • Committed action: Taking steps aligned with your values, even when it's hard

What ACT Can Help With

  • Anxiety and worry
  • Depression
  • Chronic pain
  • Stress and burnout
  • Life transitions
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship difficulties

What to Expect

ACT sessions are experiential and creative. You'll engage in mindfulness exercises, metaphors, and values exploration. The focus is not on "fixing" you but on helping you build a rich, meaningful life — even in the presence of difficulty.
